Round Rock is one of the fastest growing cities in Texas. Although it is quickly becoming a major center for economic development in Central Texas, the city works hard to maintain a high quality of life. The city is known for its award winning master plan, park system, and its school district.

In 2007 Round Rock was selected as one of the Best Communities for Young People by the Alliance for Youth to honor communities across America for their commitment to provide healthy, safe and caring environments for young people.

Round Rock has been ranked as the safest city in Texas for two years in a row and the 13th safest city in the U.S., according to a national survey of crime statistics of cities with a population of 75,000 or more.

It is home to the #1 ballpark, Dell Diamond, in the country according to the Fifth Annual Minor League News rankings. The ballpark is home to the Round Rock Express the Triple A affiliate of the Houston Astros.

Round Rock ISD

Round Rock has an award winning school district. Students identified as the most at-risk for not graduating are encouraged to participate in the New Directions—New Horizons Program, where students learn valuable skills to assist them in life success. The students can study, visit diverse work environments, and improve their financial literacy. In addition, students tour corporations, businesses and college campuses, demonstrating the firm support of the Round Rock community.

So, how did Round Rock get its name?

In 1851 a small community was formed on the banks of Brushy Creek, near a large round rock located in the middle of the creek. This round rock marked a convenient low-water crossing for wagons, horses and cattle. The "round rock" is located near Chisholm Trail Street in the middle of Brushy Creek. The town was first named Brushy Creek then renamed Round Rock in 1854. Please click the image (this image and the one above provided Larry D. Moore) to see a larger view.
